The Aubergine Sweater

THIS SWEATER!! I love the way the Aubergine Sweater turned out but boy did we have a couple rounds.. I actually almost threw this away. I was so frustrated with this design and how long it was taking to make it what I wanted. Gauge is huge with this yarn and design. I learned that the hard way! I designed this sweater with the front panel, back panel and then the sleeves. I did the front panel first and it was great! Then, I did the back panel. When it was all finished, I noticed it was considerably smaller than the front panel. My tension was too tight! So, I huffed and puffed and frogged the entire piece! Then, I restarted. I got about half way through and noticed the piece was looking too big. MY TENSION WAS TOO LOOSE! I almost screamed. I threw it to the side and gave it dirty looks for weeks. Finally, I forced myself to pick it back up and finish what I had started. I’m so glad I did but I was very resentful! So much so that I designed a whole new sweater pattern (which I will finish preparing to post as soon as this one gets squared away!) before I went any further with the Aubergine..

Please learn from my mistakes and CHECK YOUR GAUGE! More than once! I just get so caught up in how things are turning out that I forget to get pics and check my gauge. This sweater takes some time to work up because the yarn is a light yarn and the hook is smaller than I usually work with so my tension changes in the process.

Anyway, here is the pattern! Don’t forget, if you ever have any questions about sizing or pattern details, please contact me by email, found in the contact section, or leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as I can! I hope you enjoy this pattern!

Materials:

4.0 mm crochet hook

4.5 mm crochet hook

4-5 skeins of Baby Bee Sweet Delight in Grape Jelly (yes I do love this yarn!)

Yarn needle

Scissors

Sizing:

Small: bust- 21″ length- 22″ sleeves- 22″

Medium: bust- 22″ length- 22″ sleeves- 22″

Large: bust- 23.5″ length- 24″ sleeves- 22″

X-Large: bust- 25″ length- 25″ sleeves- 22″

Gauge:

Body: 4″ is 16 sts across for 20 rows

Ribbing: 4″ is 20 sts for 16 rows (this does stretch)

Notes:

The 4.0 mm crochet hook is used for only the ribbing of the sweater! When you turn your ribbing to being working on the body or sleeves of the sweater, you will switch to you 4.5 mm hook.

This sweater is worked in 5 separate pieces. The front panel, the back panel, the 2 sleeves and then the drawstring in the back. This sweater does take a lot of sewing but its worth it and the only way I know how to achieve the ribbing for the sleeves and the body pieces.

If you like your sweaters to be longer than the measurements I give you, add rows to the front and back panels before the decrease rows. Remember to add the same number of rows to each panel.

The ch 1, sk st is the loops for your drawstring to go into to tie up the back panel.

For assembly, please scroll all the way to the bottom.

Assembly:

There is no right or wrong side to the panels but I suggest when you choose which side will be the right side, choose the same for the other panels as well so the ribbing matches up. Make sure when you’re sewing, you are sewing the sweater inside out so your seams or inside the sweater. (I know seams suck, which is why my next sweater is top down with NO seams!)

To assemble, I attached the front and back panel at the shoulders first.

Then I found the center stitch of my sleeves and attached that stitch to the seam of the shoulder and I began to sew from one side to the other for both sleeves. Then, I started at the bottom of each side and attached the front and back panel along the side seam and began to sew all the way from the ribbing of the body and up to the ribbing of each sleeve.

I hope you loved making this sweater and you love the way it fits! Check back soon for the next sweater I have coming soon! follow us on instagram and facebook for updates on new releases and other announcements!

  1. I’m confused about your sizing. If I wear a Large sweater (American sizing). 23.5. Does this just mean the front half?
